Derrick Rassinier began playing horn at age 11 under the instruction of Evan Mino, former assistant principal horn of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. After moving to Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 2014, Derrick discovered composition and honed his skills under the influence of Barry Milner. After graduating from Eureka Springs High School, Derrick attended Interlochen Center for the Arts and studied horn under Corbin Wagner, and composition with Dr. Cynthia Van Maanen. Derrick received a bachelor’s degree in horn performance at the University of Arkansas studying with Dr. Tim Thompson and Dr. Katey Halbert. Derrick also studied composition and orchestration with Dr. Robert Mueller and Dr. Jeremy Allen. At the University of Arkansas, Derrick founded the Fantastic Cor, and the Hawksbill Winds - a horn quartet and wind quintet. Both ensembles performed and toured regularly across the state of Arkansas. Currently, Derrick is pursuing a Master’s degree in horn performance and pedagogy at the University of Colorado-Boulder, studying with Michael Thornton. At CU, he holds a teaching assistant position and plays in the graduate wind quintet, the Juniper Winds. Derrick regularly performs with several professional orchestras in Colorado. He has played with the Longmont Symphony, Boulder Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, and Colorado Symphony. Derrick is also an active teacher, in addition to his private studio, he has taught for the University of Arkansas Community Music School, University of Colorado Summer Music Academy, Boulder Symphony Music Academy, Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and Interlochen Arts Camp.
